Chapter 10

Jasper was standing near Dominic and Cayla, nodding but not really hearing anything. He leaned up against the wall, crossing one leg over the other. His plan to get Gayle to help him had backfired and now he not only had to deal with an ex-wife that didn’t take no for an answer, but he’d also pushed Gayle away from him.

He didn’t realize until after they had just made love again that he actually was looking forward to spending time with her and maybe having a bit of fun together on the side without any conditions or promises on both their sides. He felt that it would be freeing to finally date someone who was on the same page as him when it came to not being serious about a relationship or not wanting to get married. A lot of the women he had started to date said they understood but later hinted they wanted something more.

He twisted the tumbler of whisky as he listened to the instrumental band play in the background. He was going to call it an early night and leave. He was in a funny mood and just wanted to be alone.

Jasper smelled her before he heard her whisper in his ear.

“Stop sulking. I’ll help you with Melinda.”

“I do not sulk, woman. This is just my contemplative look,” he said, turning with a smile, happiness coursing through him. She snorted in disbelief, shaking her head and went to walk past him. But he stepped into her path and opened his arms. He dropped them to his sides just as quickly when she gave him a look that said, Don’t you dare hug me in front of everyone. There will be repercussions if you do.

His grin grew wider as he stepped into her space, leaning down, because he knew that it irritated her. He chuckled when a pinched look crossed her face, as if she’d swallowed vinegar. Then he grunted when she turned to the side and elbowed him in the stomach, disguising the hit as reaching for a glass of champagne that the waiter paused to give to her. Then the waiter turned to him, and he raised his glass to show he had a drink. The waiter nodded and proceeded away.

“Not only do you ignore my personal boundaries, but you are a hugger too. Your transgression against my person is growing.” She wrinkled her cute nose and took another sip as she looked around at the crowd of people dancing and mingling.

“So no hugs, but fucking is okay. Got it,” he said and had to swallow a laugh because her sip of champagne went down the wrong way, causing her to cough and turn and glare at him, her eyes watering.

He was about to help by not-so-nicely thumping her on her back, but Cayla rushed over to her mother, Dominic trailing behind but looking at his father suspiciously. Cayla rubbed her mother’s back and spoke to her, and he saw Gayle nodding her head. She also looked up at him and glared as if he’d caused this.
